  • Ariane 5 solid booster test fired
An Ariane 5 solid-propellant booster was test-fired yesterday at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana to help improve the reliability of Europe's heavy launcher.
The firing was performed in the booster engine stand, specifically designed for the vertical testing of motors at the site.
The motor burned for about 135 seconds, simulating the firing time during an Ariane 5 flight, and delivered a mean thrust of 6.9 MN (1.5 million lbf).
One of the goals was to prove new, thinner thermal protection on the inside of the motor's casing. The reduced pressure oscillations will lower the stress on the vehicle and its valuable passengers.
The nozzle tested a new composite material that is more resistant to combustion, and the motor also used an improved igniter.
The detailed analysis will last about six months, but preliminary results on the motor's behaviour will be available within ten days.
This firing is part of the Ariane 5 Research and Technology Accompaniment (ARTA) programme, designed to validate modifications for the next production batch of boosters to be flown.
These changes improve the vehicle's performance, modify elements that are now obsolete and reduce manufacturing costs. The programme also confirms that Ariane 5 remains reliable and ensures Europe's independent access to space.
This was the fifth test of Ariane 5's booster as part of ARTA - the next is expected in about three years.

  • Sri Lanka orders Chinese satellite - report
Sri Lanka company SupremeSAT (Pvt) Ltd. has entered into an exclusive partnership agreement with China's state owned China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) for the design, manufacturing and launching of a satellite, Daily News reported.
The company signed an investment agreement with the Board of Investment Sri Lanka to the tune of US$20 million, the daily said. This will be further increased to US$320 million, the company's long term plan is to utilise Sri Lanka's orbital slot at 50 degrees East and launch SupremeSAT, the country's first ever telecommunications satellite. It will be based on the DFH 4 platform. CGWIC has already signed nine contracts with international customers for manufacture and in-orbit delivery of telecommunication satellites, out of which four have been launched into orbit, whilst two more are set to be launched next year. 
SupremeSAT will offer all types of telecommunication services such as broadband and networking services, various broadcast solutions, back-haul or range extension facilities for telecom operators and other services such as E-government and E-learning, the Daily News said.

  • XCOR's tests of Lynx cryogenic piston pump a success
XCOR announced that it has achieved a key technical milestone with its flight weight rocket piston pump hardware. XCOR engineers have successfully and repeatedly pumped liquid oxygen (LOX) at flow rates required to supply the Lynx suborbital vehicle main engines.
Combined with earlier demonstrated kerosene pumps and fully characterised engines, XCOR is now poised for main propulsion integration into the Lynx flight weight fuselage.
XCOR's family of rocket piston pumps and engines now includes and is suitable for: kerosene, LOX, liquid hydrogen (LH2), and liquid methane. These piston pumps are highly reusable rocket engines for XCOR's Lynx and other launchers including upper stage liquid hydrogen engines suitable for the Atlas V, Delta IV, and the planned NASA Space Launch System (SLS). The current generation pump will supply fuel and oxidiser for the Lynx suborbital launch vehicle, also being developed by XCOR.

  • Long March 3B launches military satellite Chinasat-2A
May 26th, 2012 - A new military communications satellite – the Zhongxing-2A (Chinasat-2A) – was launched by a Chang Zheng-3B (Y17) (Long March 3B) launch vehicle on Saturday. Lift off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center LC2 launch complex took place at 15:56 UTC.
The Chinasat-2A satellite was built on the DFH-4 platform, with a launch mass around 5,200 kg. It was manufactured by the China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC).
Due to its military nature, there is little technical information on the satellite. However, China use two types of satellites for secure military communications: the Fenghuo and the Shentong.
The Fenghuo series is used for tactical military communications, providing secured digital data and voice communication to Chinese military forces.
The Chinese are currently operating the DFH-4 based Fenghuo-2 second generation satellite, with the first of the series – the ZX-1A Zhongxing-1A (37804 2011-047A) – launched at 13:33 UTC on September 18th, 2011, by the Chang Zheng-3B (Y16) rocket.
The Shentong geostationary military communication satellites are operated by the Army and their aim is to provide secured voice and data communications services for ground users using Ku-band. The satellite was based on the DFH-3 (Dongfanghong-3) satellite platform that was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), having a heavier payload with better reliability and increased power supply.
Chinasat-2A will be the first of a second generation DFH-4 based Shentong-2 satellite in operation.
To meet demand of international satellite launch market, especially for high power and heavy communications satellites, the development of Chang Zheng-3B launch vehicle was started in 1986 on the basis of the fight proven technology of Long March launch vehicles. The Chang Zheng-3B is the most powerful launch vehicle on the Chinese space launch fleet.
Each of the four boosters has a 15.326 meter length with a 2.25 meter diameter, consuming 37,700 kg of N2O4 / UDMH. Equipped with a YF-25 engine capable of a ground thrust of 740.4 kN and a ground specific impulse of 2,556.2 Ns/kg.
The first stage has a 23.272 meter length with a 3.35 meter diameter, consuming 171,800 kg of N2O4 / UDMH. Equipped with a YF-21C engine capable of a ground thrust of 2,961.6 kN and a ground specific impulse of 2,556.5 Ns/kg.
The second stage has a 19.92 meter length with a 3.35 meter diameter, consuming 49,400 kg of N2O4 / UDMH. Equipped with a YF-24E cluster engine with a main engine capable of a vacuum thrust of 742 kN and a vernier engine with a vacuum thrust of 47.1 kN (specific impulses of 2,922.6 Ns/kg and 2,910.5 Ns/kg, respectively).
The third stage has a 12.375 meter length with a 3.0 meter diameter, consuming 18,200 kg of LH2 / LOX. Equipped with a YF-75 engine capable of a vacuum thrust of 167.17 kN and a specific impulse in vacuum of 4,295 Ns/kg.

Why so many binders (presumably filled with paper) are seen on the desks of the engineers at NASA's Mission control yesterday when they were docking SpaceX's Dragon module to the Space Station?
In contrast, the SpaceX folks had (almost) none at there mission control center. The only conclusion one can draw from this is that the government agency is so riddled with bureaucracy that everything must be followed "by the book" so to speak. But this seems simple minded to me.

Falcon 9 launch scrubbed at last second
MAy 19, 2012- SpaceX's COTS 2 demonstration launch on 19 May was aborted half a second before lift-off when the flight computer detected slightly high pressure in the engine 5 combustion chamber. The company said it has discovered root cause and repairs are underway. "During rigorous inspections of the engine, SpaceX engineers discovered a faulty check valve on the Merlin engine. We are now in the process of replacing the failed valve. Those repairs should be complete tonight. We will continue to review data on Sunday. If things look good, we will be ready to attempt to launch on Tuesday, May 22nd at 3:44 AM Eastern [0744 UTC]," SpaceX said in a statement. 
The rocket is carrying a Dragon cargo spacecraft on a test flight to maneuver around and berth with the ISS, allowing it, if successful, to make future cargo deliveries to the ISS.

How the Faulty Nitrogen-Purge Valve Forced SpaceX to Abort

May 21, 2012 - SpaceX has replaced a faulty valve that led to the aborted launch attempt early Saturday morning and is currently planning a second launch attempt at 3:44 a.m. EDT Tuesday, May 22. The first launch attempt was unsuccessful after a last-half-second shutoff occurred due to higher than acceptable pressure in the combustion chamber of one of the Falcon 9′s Merlin rocket engines.
After examining the problematic engine, SpaceX engineers were able to trace the high-pressure problem to a valve that controls the flow of nitrogen used to purge the engine before ignition. Using the inert nitrogen gas to purge rocket engines is common and has been used for decades. The nitrogen displaces gases and/or liquids, effectively cleaning the engine and preventing any volatile mixtures before ignition.
A check valve that allows the nitrogen purge prior to ignition in the Merlin engine was stuck open just before launch. This stuck valve allowed “liquid oxygen to flow from the main injector [for the rocket engine itself] into the gas generator injector” that generates hot turbine gas, which drives the turbopumps, according to SpaceX. The turbopumps are basically very high-powered fuel and oxidizer pumps that deliver the liquids to the main combustion chamber of the rocket. The result was the turbopumps were operating at a slightly higher power level, resulting in the high pressure detected in the combustion chamber on engine five. Full story

Japan's H-2A rocket orbits craft to aid climate scientists May 17, 2012-A Japanese H-2A rocket deployed four satellites in orbit Thursday, putting up a research mission to track the changing role of water in Earth's climate and a South Korean payload to gather high-resolution photos for environmental monitoring and security authorities. The 187-foot-tall launcher blasted off at 1639 GMT (12:39 p.m. EDT) from the Tanegashima Space Center, a picturesque island spaceport in southern Japan. The rocket soared south from Tanegashima, its hydrogen-fueled main engine and twin solid rocket boosters rising into the sky in a ball of orange flame. North Korean rocket launch fails


North Korea has admitted its long-range rocket failed to deliver a satellite into orbit today as US and South Korean officials said it crashed into the sea a few minutes after launch.
The rocket crashed in a sea that separates the Korean peninsula from China off the west coast of South Korea after flying 120km from its launch site close to the Chinese border, officials in Seoul, Washington and Tokyo said.
Pyongyang had defied international pressure from the United States, the United Nations and others to push ahead with the launch timed to celebrate the 100th birthday of Kim Il-sung, the deceased founder of the state, and to coincide with the ascent to power of his grandson Kim Jong-un.
"The earth observation satellite failed to enter its preset orbit," a newsreader said on North Korea's state TV. "Scientists, technicians and experts are now looking into the cause of the failure."
It was an unusual admission of failure by the unpredictable regime, since it will be seen by its 23 million people who are only given access to state-controlled news sources. A similarly-failed launch in 2009 was touted by the North as a success.
China was not given advance notice about the exact timing of the rocket launch, a foreign ministry spokesman said today.
Today's launch breached the terms of a recent aid deal struck with the United States as well as United Nations sanctions. Washington, Tokyo and Seoul issued sharp rebukes and said they would step up cooperation and vigilance.
"Despite the failure of its attempted missile launch, North Korea's provocative action threatens regional security, violates international law and contravenes its own recent commitments," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.
North Korea said it wanted the Unha-3 rocket to put a weather satellite into orbit, although critics believed it was designed to enhance its capacity to design a ballistic missile to deliver a nuclear warhead capable of hitting the continental United States.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command, Norad, said the first stage fell into the sea west of South Korea, and the remainder of the satellite-carrying missile was deemed to have failed. "No debris fell on land," Norad said. "At no time were the missile or the resultant debris a threat.
The world's most militarised border separates North and South Korea and the two states remain technically at war after an armistice ended the Korean War in 1953.
South Korea said it was dispatching ships to try to retrieve the rocket, which it said split into 20 fragments as the first and second stages failed to separate, showing that the new rocket had failed to travel as far as the previous one in 2009.
A Russian observer, a space policy expert from the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics, told Reuters in Pyongyang that long range rocket launches took time to perfect.
"So I would be quite surprised if the third launch of a North Korean rocket would end up in a success, although I believe that they had from 60 to 70 percent chance to successfully put the satellite into orbit," said Yuri Karash.
Close ally China had warned against the launch, and South Korean intelligence officials said Pyongyang may be ready to follow it up with a nuclear test as it did after a rocket launch in 2009, even though it could face more United Nations sanctions if it did.
The launch was announced just weeks after a "Leap Year" deal that saw Washington agree to provide food aid. Among the promises made by Pyongyang in return was that it would not launch a long range rocket or undertake nuclear tests.
Complaints from the United States, South Korea and Japan will likely lead to pressure for more sanctions to close Pyongyang's access to trade that could aid the North's programme, although China would probably resist even though its diplomacy failed to stop the rocket.
Now led by 20-something Kim Jong-un, the third of his line to hold power, North Korea had planned to make 2012 the year in which it became a "strong and prosperous nation" and the launch was part of a programme to burnish its credentials. It even invited foreign media in to cover the birthday celebrations and showed them the launch site.
Kim was named First Secretary of the Workers Party of Korea on Wednesday, as he accumulates titles and posts similar to those held by his father, Kim Jong-il.
State newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Friday dubbed him "the sun whom all the party members, service personnel and people of the DPRK [Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea] acclaimed out of their heartfelt desire".

Robotic refuelling mission in space

The Canadian Space Agency is collaborating with NASA on a new project called the Robotic Refuelling Mission (RRM) to demonstrate how space robots could use specially designed tools and unique manoeuvres to refuel satellites.
RRM will be conducted on the International Space Station using Dextre, the Station's Canadian-built robotic handyman. It will mark the first time that Dextre is used for a research and development project.
Satellites are currently designed to never be accessed after launch; typically, the fuel tank is triple-sealed and then covered with protective blankets. Dextre will perform a series of manoeuvres that will simulate accessing the fuel systems of a typical satellite. The RRM hardware, provided by NASA, includes four specialised tools for Dextre and a customised task box (roughly the size of a refrigerator) that will represent a satellite.
With this RRM toolkit (including a Wire Cutter and Blanket Manipulation Tool, Multifunction Tool, Safety Cap Removal Tool and Nozzle Tool), Dextre will cut through the simulated satellite's exterior, remove layers of insulation and cut away the wiring covering the fuel cap. In the next phase of the operation, the robotic handyman will connect a hose to the fuel valve and pump simulated liquid fuel into the mock spacecraft. The RRM tool kit and task box launched to the Space Station on board the Space Shuttle Atlantis on its final flight in July 2011.
The RRM task box and tool kit was developed by NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center. Dextre operations for the Robotic Refuelling Mission will be remotely controlled by flight controllers at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and the Canadian Space Agency's Mission Operations Centre in Saint-Hubert, Quebec.

China Working On Big Range Of Space Engines Bradley Perrett Xian, China

China is nearing what many space engineers think is the ideal for a family of space launchers: a set of rockets built with just a few standard engines and airframe modules, maximizing production runs. The family—the Long March 5, 6 and 7—will cover the 0.5-25-ton payload territory to low Earth orbit and up to 14 tons to geosynchronous orbit, meeting the great bulk of space launch demands.
So it may come as a surprise that the launcher and engine firms under national space industry group CASC are not satisfied. They are looking at introducing solid rockets into the mix, as boosters or small launchers, including some dropped from aircraft. The Long March 7, at least, will get non-standard second stages as its manufacturer, CASC subsidiary CALT, looks for ways to vary its payload (see following article). Chinese engineers are also working on engines fueled by methane or liquefied petroleum gas.
